Sculpting Black Hair Workshop

Saturday February 28, 2:00pm-5:00pm

Details

Detangling the Business of Black Hair: Storytelling Through Clay Tiles By: Chika Olandu Celebrate Black History Month through an immersive, hands on ceramic workshop exploring the artistry, history, and cultural significance of Black hair. In this 3 hour workshop, participants will learn how to sculpt richly textured clay tiles inspired by coils, curls, braids, locs, and other protective styles that have shaped identity and expression across generations. Students will be introduced to hand building and surface sculpting methods such as carving, coiling, twisting, and pattern layering that mimic natural hair textures while learning how Black hair has served as a symbol of resistance, creativity, spirituality, and community. Participants will then design and sculpt their own personalized clay tile that reflects their identity, heritage, or artistic interpretation of textured hair. Whether honoring lived experience or learning as an ally, each attendee will walk away with a meaningful piece that embodies cultural appreciation and self expression. These tiles are designed to become functional objects in your home whether as wall art, magnets, coasters, trinket dishes, or part of a larger mosaic! This workshop welcomes all levels from beginners to intermediate ceramic artists and invites anyone interested in art, culture, identity, or learning through creative practice.
